The Consejo Regulador was established by the initiation of the winemakers and viticultors of Bierzo. After centuries of history in the cultivation of the vine, the economic importance of this sector and the necesity of its regulation by the existence of an institution to improve the quality and the trade of the Bercianos wines. The Denomination of Origin was recognized in 1989 and its reglament was approval. This Denomination has a growing area of almost 3,000 hectares of vineyards in 22 villages. The main varieties of red grapes are Mencía and Garnacha Tintorera, and of white grapes, Godello, Doña Blanca, Palomino and Malvasía.
