In 2006, Manuel Castro and Javier Lázaro acquired 2½ hectares of vineyard with the goal of creating a vino de terruño (terroir wine) which would embody all the potential of the slatey local soil and the indigenous grape, Garnacha Tinta (Red Grenache)
They have achieved the goal in some style and every year sees a new vintage of their signature wine, Lajas, a most expressive vino de terruño, made from the local Garnacha grape. So far, three great new vintages in bottle, and an achievement to be proud of.
There is nothing more pleasurable than sampling Lajas 2007, 2008 and 2009 at the vertical wine-tasting events organised by the bodega.
For those who have already tried them, no further persuasion is needed. If you haven’t yet been so fortunate, don’t delay… grasp the opportunity to taste, savour and be won over!
Colour is a deep, dense cherry-red.
First greets the nose with dark forest fruit, blackberry and red-fruit liqueur aromas and later, after time to breathe, with earthy scents of metal, minerals and graphite, all evoking the strong, slatey soil of the vineyard at El Peñiscal. All this combined with essence of toasted oak and vanilla from its 15-month sojourn in barrel.
Texture is satin-smooth, with a nice acidity that titillates the palate and potent tannins giving firmness. With subtle earth and mineral tastes and a long, satisfying finish, that reflects the strength and character of its unique terruño.
Ideal as a gift, or for enhancing those extra special meals and gatherings that require a wine that fits the occasion.
