The best to be found in

El Imperio de la Garnacha

The people, the spirit

The Roman family began producing wines at the present bodega (winery) in 1999.

The family tradition of winemaking, however, dates from the early years of the 20th century and this is the fourth generation that has dedicated itself to the world of wines and vineyards. José Manuel, the head of the family, is completely devoted to outdoor life and the environment where his vines grow and he has passed this enthusiasm to his son Héctor, who works the vineyards alongside him.

Héctor is a youthful innovator and is also a driving spirit behind the oenology and the winemaking process at Bodegas Roman.

Enterprising and energetic, he has managed to produce some high quality wines of his own, maintaining the purity of the grapes and nuances of the terruño.

With time, his effort, persistence and dedication have seen his wines regarded as among the best to be found in El Imperio de Garnacha (the Garnacha/Grenache Empire, i.e. the Campo de Borja D.O.).

His mother, Julia, sister Maria and brother-in-law Jorge, together coordinate the administration and logistics behind the bodega.

With their lives completely centered around the vineyard, the Roman family is wholeheartedly dedicated to producing wines of the finest quality.

The vineyards, the land

The overall area under vine totals 22 hectares, consisting of a number of individual vineyards lying at altitudes between 500 and 700 meters, and mainly located in the district of Tabuenca, right in the heart of the Campo de Borja D.O. The vineyards, which have varied sloping gradients between 5 and 25%, are very picturesque and nestle on small undulating hillsides in the plains below Monte Moncayo.

The grape used is the indigenous Garnacha Tinta (Red Grenache). Vines are between 40 and 70 years old, mainly in the traditional goblet low-vine plantation system and give very low yields of excellent grapes.

Brown, chalky and ferrous-clay soils in terraces. High stone content both at the surface and within the soil, with good drainage. Soil temperature and rate of potential evapotranspiration is high and levels of water retention very low. Soils that are ideally suited to producing an exceptionally good Garnacha.

The land is perfect for growing the Garnacha grape, the fruit at the heart of “El Imperio de la Garnacha”, the name given to this area in recognition of the great acclaim its wines have received, both within Spain itself and in international wine markets.
Weather conditions here are quite unique; namely, a continental climate with an Atlantic influence in winter and a Mediterranean influence in the summertime. The vineyards are ventilated by a cool, dry wind from the north known as “El Cierzo”.

The harvest is always carried out manually at sunrise, using crates that hold a maximum of 20kg. The yields are very low (between a half and one kilo per vine) because of the particular growing environment. Careful selection and monitoring both in the vineyard and at the bodega ensure that only grapes in the best condition are used.

Dedicated to producing wines

of the finest quality

Wikemaking and ageing, art and science

The actual winemaking process takes place in cement containers lined with epoxy and in stainless steel tanks, depending on the type of wine. Maceration is at low temperatures and lasts between 8 and 12 days.

Fermentation takes place at carefully controlled temperatures between 24 and 28°C.

Malolactic fermentation takes place in the cask. Wines are aged in French oak of the highest quality which gives a variety of toasted notes to the wine.

Ongoing research and experimentation is carried out in order to produce wines of the finest quality through painstaking work in the vineyard and a closely controlled production process.
